About Us
At Mayborn Acres, our mission is rooted in care—care for our animals, our land, and the people who gather around the table to enjoy real, honest food. Located just outside Sioux Falls, our farm is built on sustainable, pasture-based principles that prioritize animal welfare, soil health, and strong community connections.
In addition to raising poultry, I am passionate about sharing knowledge with the community. I offer chicken processing classes, where I teach the step-by-step process of preparing poultry from farm to table. I also teach cooking classes to help others build their skills, including breaking down a chicken and preparing delicious recipes that highlight the flavor and versatility of pasture-raised meat. Over the years, I’ve provided consultations for individuals looking to improve
their poultry production or cooking techniques. My commitment to education extends to speaking at various conferences, where I share my experience and insights on sustainable farming, poultry care, and the benefits of locally raised food.
We specialize in pasture-raised poultry, offering whole chickens, cut-ups (including wings, thighs, breasts, and drumsticks), and stock options, such as nutrient-rich necks, backs, and feet—perfect for making healthy, flavorful broths.

Practices
At Mayborn Acres, we believe farming is about more than just food—it’s about regenerating the land, building resilient food systems, and reconnecting people with the sources of their nourishment. Our practices are designed to work in harmony with nature, creating a model that is ethical, sustainable, and deeply rooted in place. We’re proud to raise food that reflects the values of quality, integrity, and stewardship—and we’re excited to contribute to a thriving local food system.
Every product is raised with integrity, from the pasture to the plate. From day one, our birds receive the essentials they need to thrive: clean food, fresh water, and warm shelter. In their earliest weeks, they are raised in a brooder—a safe, temperature-controlled environment where they build strength and vitality. Once they’re ready, they are moved to chicken tractors on fresh pasture, where they enjoy sunshine, forage, and plenty of space to express their natural behaviors—all while staying protected from predators and the elements.
Our flocks are fed a combination of pasture forage and a locally sourced corn and supplement mix, ensuring a well-rounded, nutritious diet that supports healthy growth and exceptional flavor. We raise Freedom Rangers, a hardy, active breed well-suited for life on pasture and known for their rich, full-bodied taste. Importantly, we never use antibiotics, hormones, or vaccines—only natural care and a healthy, stress-free environment for our birds.
The health of the land is central to our work. One of the fields we’ve run birds through the longest is a testament to what rotational grazing and regenerative practices can do. With even a modicum of rainfall, the pasture now grows so vigorously that even the horse grazing it has trouble keeping up—a far cry from its earlier state. This past year, the growth was so dense and healthy that only three thistles managed to take hold. It’s a clear sign that these practices don’t just raise better poultry—they build better soil.
