About Us
Prairie Moon Herbs began in 1997 when my husband, Harry, and I moved to the prairie of southeast South Dakota. He had just started his teaching and research at the University of South Dakota and I was pregnant with our first child, Elena. She was born 2 months later on a full moon, and we christened her with the middle name, Prairie Moon. As an herbalist, I wanted to focus my growing on medicinal herb crops. I had been bee keeping for 8 years before moving to South Dakota and kept this going after moving here. Honey, propels and beeswax all lend themselves nicely to herbal products. Once I developed the first tea blend: Vermillion Sunset, I decided to name the business in honor of my first daughter, adopting her middle name, Prairie Moon, and creating the Prairie Moon Herb label in 1998. vermillion Sunset herbal tea has been popular in vermillion, sold at the local coffee shop and Farmer's Market, and now the Valiant Vineyards Winery. Our farm has been growing organically since it's inception and are currently working with CCOF for organic certification. We give herb walks and talks on the farm and in Vermilion. We sell year round at the Vermillion Farmer's Market, and visitors are always welcome at the farm. We adopted three foster llamas last year and plan to create composted manure available. I am a part-time farmer, and part-time Registered Nurse with certificates in Integrative Health and as a Lactation Counselor.
Practices
We are beginning the organic certification process with CCOF, and plan to be fully certified by 2017. The tea blends are designed to contain as many ingredients as possible that we grow and process on the farm. All products are made with 100% natural, pure products. We have a drying shed and processing room for our products.
